King’s Cross St Pancras Tube station has undergone a significant upgrade as traditional lighting has been replaced with 6,000 energy-efficient Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). This initiative is part of a broader effort by Transport for London (TfL) to retrofit 120 stations across the Tube network, with over 40 percent of the system already benefiting from LED lighting. The change at King’s Cross is projected to save approximately 1,400 MWh of electricity annually, which is enough to power 500 homes, and it will reduce carbon emissions by nearly 300 tonnes per year, equating to annual savings of up to £455,000. The installation is designed to improve lighting conditions for safety and security, particularly in enhancing CCTV performance. TfL aims to complete the conversion of all Tube stations to LED by the start of the next decade, contributing to London’s goal of becoming a net-zero city by 2030.
