As fall begins, migrating birds are increasingly present in Northern Virginia, but dark sky advocates warn that light pollution poses a significant threat to these avian travelers. The Northern Virginia Bird Alliance, formerly the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia, is collaborating with DarkSky International and the National Audubon Society on a “Lights Out” initiative aimed at reducing light exposure from buildings during peak migration hours. This effort encourages tall buildings to dim their lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., especially from March 15 to May 31 and September 1 to November 15. With millions of birds migrating at night, lights can confuse and disorient them, leading to dangerous collisions. Residents are also encouraged to minimize outdoor lighting and install window shades to further combat light pollution. The initiative highlights the vital role birds play in the ecosystem and includes a kickoff event scheduled for October 9, focusing on creating a better environment for spring migration.
