Three Highlights: PHS Introduces New Sports, Announces Earlier Tree Lighting, and Plans Ribbon-Cutting Events

Philomath High School is set to enhance its spring athletic offerings by introducing boys volleyball and separate boys and girls golf teams, as confirmed by Athletic Director Mike Hood. While the school currently participates in 18 of the 20 sports sanctioned by the Oregon School Activities Association, the addition of these programs marks a significant expansion. Boys volleyball, classified as an “emerging activity,” will join the ranks of golf, which has garnered interest from around six students for each team. Concerns were raised about the potential impact of new sports on existing spring athletics, but Hood believes that the added opportunities will benefit students, as they can participate in multiple sports simultaneously. Golf practices will commence on March 3, leading up to the state championships in May, as Philomath secures a home course for training.
