Record Number of Clay Lamps Lit in Celebration of Diwali Across India

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — The Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, was celebrated with great zeal in Ayodhya, India, where millions participated in a historic event by lighting a record 2.51 million clay oil lamps along the banks of the Saryu River. Attendees gathered to honor Lord Ram, the deity believed to have been born in the city, and paid tribute to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. A Guinness World Records team recognized Ayodhya for surpassing last year’s record of 2.2 million lamps, marking the seventh consecutive world record for this event. The celebrations featured traditional performances, a laser show, and eco-friendly fireworks, while heightened security measures ensured the safety of participants. Thousands of volunteers meticulously arranged and lit the lamps, creating a stunning, illuminated display that highlighted the spirit of the festival, which is also considered a significant cultural and religious occasion for Hindus across the country.
