Plans for the installation of new floodlights at Sheffield United’s Derek Dooley Community Centre in Crookes are set to be reviewed by local councillors on November 12 as part of efforts to reopen the facility, which has been closed since the Covid-19 pandemic. The proposal includes the addition of 12 LED lighting columns, each standing 26 feet tall, to allow for evening use of the sports pitches. The council has received 15 objections and four letters of support, with concerns raised about potential light pollution, noise, and traffic impacts, as well as effects on local wildlife. Supporters, however, argue that the floodlights would bolster security and enable the pitches to be used again. The council report indicates that the club is willing to limit the lights’ operating hours to 21:15 on weekdays and 19:15 on weekends to address community concerns.
