New research from an Australian-led study indicates that LED lighting on the underside of surfboards or kayaks may help deter great white shark attacks. The study revealed that the lights interfered with the sharks’ ability to perceive silhouettes against the sunlight, leading to a reduction in their tendency to follow and attack seal-shaped decoys. Macquarie University’s Professor Nathan Hart emphasized that these findings enhance our understanding of how sharks perceive their environment and suggest the potential for creating non-lethal deterrents to improve safety in shark-infested waters.
