Several Chinese tech giants, including Alibaba, ByteDance, and Meituan, are intensifying their recruitment efforts in Silicon Valley to enhance their artificial intelligence (AI) research and development teams, as reported by the Financial Times. To attract top American talent, these companies are providing enticing incentives, with a focus on building their capabilities ahead of potential stricter regulations from the Trump administration. The move is particularly strategic due to U.S. export bans on advanced NVIDIA AI chips to Chinese firms, which have prompted these companies to leverage their U.S. offices to acquire essential technology. Alibaba aims to expand its AI team to advance its AI search engine, while Meituan is forming a dedicated team for AI menu translation and assistant functions. Meanwhile, ByteDance has already established multiple AI teams in the U.S., working on various projects, including a large language model. In contrast, Baidu has significantly curtailed its U.S. operations due to internal and geopolitical challenges.
