New $70 Million LED Runway System Activated at Auckland Airport

Auckland Airport has successfully completed a significant upgrade to its runway lighting, replacing traditional halogen lamps with 240 new LED lights, including in-ground, runway edge, and threshold lights. This upgrade, which took place during the airport’s only scheduled flight downtime, is aimed at enhancing safety and reliability while aligning with the airport’s commitment to low carbon solutions. The new LEDs are expected to consume up to 70% less energy and have a lifespan of 75,000 hours compared to the previous halogen lamps. In addition to the lighting overhaul, a new power center is being constructed to modernize infrastructure dating back to the 1960s, supporting future expansion projects at the airport, including a second runway and a future cargo precinct. The airport’s project team is ensuring rigorous maintenance protocols, including regular checks and cleaning, to maximize the effectiveness of the upgraded lighting system.
