Recent research from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory highlights the negative health effects associated with LED lighting, including the screens of smartphones, particularly those utilizing Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) for dimming. The study emphasizes that while leading brands like Apple and Samsung have improved their display flicker rates to 480Hz, this still falls short of the recommended 2400Hz needed to mitigate eye strain and other symptoms. Many users have reported headaches, eye fatigue, and disorientation due to the flickering effects of LED screens, with those prone to migraines affected significantly more. In contrast, brands like OnePlus and Motorola are adopting safer DC dimming technologies. The findings raise crucial questions about manufacturers’ commitment to long-term health considerations as LED technology proliferates in daily life.
