A research team from Macquarie University has discovered that LED lights can significantly reduce shark attacks, particularly from Great White sharks, by altering how these predators perceive objects in the water. Conducted in South African waters, the study involved towing a polystyrene seal model equipped with various LED patterns, revealing that models with lights were far less likely to be attacked compared to those without. The findings suggest that brightness and light patterns, such as horizontal stripes, impact the sharks’ ability to detect potential prey, offering a promising method for enhancing safety for surfers and beachgoers. The researchers emphasize the need for further studies to assess the wider applicability of this technique to other shark species.
