On October 27, Chinese astrophotographer Shengyu Li captured a remarkable and rare phenomenon during an avalanche at Mount Xiannairi in Sichuan. While aiming to photograph star trails, Li witnessed an unexpected blue light flashing from the avalanche, which experts believe may be caused by triboluminescence—a process where light is emitted due to friction and the breaking of chemical bonds in ice. This striking luminescence occurred when an icy serac broke free from a glacier, creating a significant “smash point” that resulted in the blue glow. This discovery is intriguing as it lacks prior documentation, with experts further explaining that similar light emissions can be seen when certain materials, like sugar, are fractured.
