Coventry to Invest £10 Million in Upgrading LED Street Lighting

Coventry City Council is set to review a proposal to upgrade over 29,000 street lights to energy-efficient LED technology, with an anticipated cost of more than £10 million. Councillor Patricia Hetherton highlighted that the transition to LED bulbs would not only reduce the council’s annual energy bill, which stood at £3.4 million, by approximately £900,000 but also lessen the carbon footprint of the city’s lighting. A successful trial in Hillfields received positive feedback, prompting the council to move forward with the plans, which will be discussed at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday and further assessed at a full council session on January 14. This proposal comes amid previous controversies over street lighting changes that led to public dissent, including a petition earlier this year to revert certain lights to operation during late hours.
