Historic Idaho 55 Landmark Taken Down After Years of Presence

The iconic neon sign of The Chief Hotel, Café and Bar, a cherished landmark in downtown Cascade, Idaho, was removed on Wednesday after decades of service dating back to 1946. The sign, which had recently become expensive and hazardous to maintain—particularly after a bulb fire raised safety concerns—was taken down to facilitate repairs on the building now housing Palooza Basecamp & Eatery. The removal also stripped the sign of its grandfathered status under Cascade’s dark sky lighting regulations, which went into effect in 2019. The sign, weighing approximately 1,300 pounds, was sold to a mystery buyer shortly before its removal, and while local residents expressed nostalgia for the landmark, they acknowledged that changes are a part of evolving community landscapes. Cascade Mayor Judy Nissula remarked on the emotional impact of the sign’s removal, highlighting its historical significance while recognizing the necessity of adaptation.
