Tejas Anto Kannampuzha, a 2022 Physics graduate from the University of Hyderabad (UoH), has developed an innovative solution to reduce Acid Fly attacks in student hostels, a frequent issue that causes discomfort through Paederus dermatitis. Collaborating with B.R. Shamanna from the School of Medical Sciences, Kannampuzha’s research demonstrates that switching from traditional lighting sources, such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and incandescent bulbs, to LED lights—which emit significantly less UV-A radiation—can effectively decrease the incidence of these harmful fly encounters. This practical approach, based on a study of 209 affected residents, has been published in the Indian Journal of Entomology and has drawn praise from UoH Vice-Chancellor B.J. Rao, who advocates for further research into how different lighting impacts fly attraction.
