A spectacular display of Aurora Australis, or the Southern Lights, is anticipated to grace the skies over Australia tonight, potentially visible on Christmas evening or Boxing Day morning. Camping enthusiasts and those residing away from city lights have the highest chance of witnessing this stunning cosmic event, according to astronomer Michael Brown from Monash University. While Tasmania is expected to have the best views, the aurora could also be seen from southern parts of the mainland. With darker skies due to the Moon being below the horizon, stargazers have a promising opportunity to enjoy this natural wonder. Brown notes that 2024 has been an exceptional year for auroras, and with increased solar activity, more stunning displays may be on the horizon. In the event that the aurora doesn’t appear, the clear skies will still offer spectacular views of planets like Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn.
