Upgrades Planned for Local Street Lighting

North Yorkshire Council is set to upgrade approximately 4,500 streetlights to energy-efficient LED technology, aiming to save around £300,000 in annual costs while reducing carbon emissions and protecting dark skies. The three-year project will not only replace outdated lighting, in compliance with new EU regulations, but also implement part-night lighting controls to minimize light pollution, particularly in rural areas and national parks. Cllr Keane Duncan highlighted the upgrade’s environmental benefits, with energy savings projected to exceed one million kilowatts per hour. The initiative follows a broader effort since 2012, during which the council has replaced around 50,000 streetlights, contributing to a significant reduction in energy use and costs. The project, funded by £2.5 million of additional capital investment, is expected to be cost-neutral within a decade. Residents on affected streets will be notified in advance.
