Three oil and gas sites in the Permian Basin made history Wednesday by becoming the first in the world to receive dark sky certification for their successful reduction of light pollution. Franklin Mountain Energy implemented significant changes in their lighting practices at these sites, minimizing skyglow and preserving nighttime visibility for local communities and the natural environment. This initiative is part of the Dark for the Park Alliance, a public-private partnership that includes various organizations focused on promoting responsible lighting practices while maintaining operational safety. DarkSky International commended the collaborative efforts, highlighting the importance of balancing safety and protecting the quality of the night sky. Despite these achievements, Franklin Mountain Energy has faced scrutiny for past violations of clean air standards and was fined $400,000 for emissions violations earlier this year.
