In a notable effort to combat light pollution, DarkSky International has awarded its first-ever certification to Denver-based Franklin Mountain Energy for implementing lighting retrofits at several oil and natural gas sites in New Mexico. These changes aim to reduce unwanted outdoor lighting that obscures the night sky, enhancing visibility for stargazers and supporting local environmental practices. The retrofits are expected to decrease skyglow around prominent locations such as Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Advocates highlight that these efforts not only contribute to environmental preservation but also enhance workplace safety. In response to rising light pollution, New Mexico lawmakers are also considering updates to existing regulations on outdoor lighting as part of a broader initiative to protect dark skies, particularly in sensitive areas like Chaco Culture National Historical Park.
