Upgrade of Streetlights in North Yorkshire Aims to Preserve Night Sky Visibility

North Yorkshire councilors have announced a £4 million initiative to enhance the region’s dark skies by upgrading 4,500 streetlights to energy-efficient LED bulbs. Over the next three years, half of these new lights will automatically turn off at midnight, reducing light pollution and saving approximately £300,000 annually in energy costs. Keane Duncan, executive member for highways and transport, emphasized that the warm white LED lighting will not only benefit residents with improved night sky visibility but also support local nocturnal wildlife.
