Government Official Aims to Address Road Safety Issues Related to Brighter LED Headlights

Motorists are increasingly voicing concerns about the impact of bright LED headlights, with campaigners reporting that many are feeling “blinded” while driving at night. Despite reassurances from the Department for Transport, which indicates no clear link between advanced lighting technologies and rising collision rates, the Automobile Association (AA) highlights that three-quarters of its members have experienced discomfort from oncoming lights. Recent collision data confirms that dazzling headlights contributed to 216 incidents in 2023, up slightly from the previous year. Labour MP Graeme Downie raised the issue in Parliament, stating that while newer lights improve visibility for drivers, they can pose hazards for others on the road. The government has commissioned independent research into headlamp glare, with expectant findings anticipated by summer 2025, aiming to address the safety concerns voiced by drivers.
