Survey Reveals Three-Quarter of Drivers Struggle with Dazzling Headlights

Campaigners have raised significant concerns about the increasing brightness of vehicle headlights, particularly LED lights, claiming they dazzle and blind drivers more than ever before. According to a survey by the AA, 75% of its members reported issues with headlight glare, while 85% of RAC survey respondents indicated that the problem has worsened. Despite these claims, UK minister Lilian Greenwood downplayed the road safety risks, stating that current data does not support the notion that brighter headlights are linked to more accidents. Dazzling headlights were linked to 216 collisions in 2023, a slight increase from the previous year, though a decrease from numbers seen in 2017 and 2010. Concerns surrounding the impact of enhanced lighting technology, especially on taller vehicles like SUVs, have prompted calls for independent research, set to publish findings in summer 2025.
