Residents of Milton, near Cambridge, have voiced concerns over the inadequacy of the newly installed LED streetlights, particularly in areas like Willow Crescent, claiming they have become dimmer over time. Concerns have been raised about safety, with one local stating that the dim lighting forces pedestrians to walk in the road instead of using obscured pavements. The criticism coincides with an announcement from Cambridgeshire County Council, which plans to replace around 47,500 existing streetlights with LEDs, aiming for reduced light pollution and improved energy efficiency. Council officials emphasize that the new lights will provide similar brightness levels to older models while contributing to net-zero emission goals by 2030. They argue that the LEDs are designed to focus light on the road, potentially leading to darker surrounding areas, but insist this approach will help manage energy consumption and lessen environmental impact. The council estimates the replacement project will take approximately two years.
