Campaigners are raising alarms about the challenges posed by increasingly brighter LED headlights, as drivers report feeling “blinded” on the roads. While the Department for Transport maintains that collision statistics do not indicate a direct link between LED headlights and a rise in accidents, members of the AA express heightened concern over glare from oncoming vehicles. Recent data reveals that dazzling headlights contributed to 216 road incidents in 2023, with areas like Kent and Surrey seeing the most cases. Labour MP Graeme Downie and RAC officials emphasize the need to address this issue, as many drivers struggle with heightened glare, despite advancements in headlight technology that are designed to enhance visibility. The government plans to undertake independent research to explore the causes of headlamp glare and potential solutions, with findings expected by summer 2025.
