Across the globe, dark sky parks are becoming vital for preserving stargazing experiences, and New Mexico aims to lead this movement with a proposed revised Night Sky Protection Act. As rapid development increases light pollution across the state, many residents can no longer see the Milky Way, adversely affecting both wildlife and human health. The upcoming legislation, sponsored by Senators Liz Stefanics and Peter Wirth, seeks to mitigate skyglow by requiring new lighting installations to be fully shielded, ensuring that light is directed downward rather than upward. While existing lighting won’t need to be changed immediately, certain exemptions are made for navigational and industrial lighting. This bill not only aims to enhance nighttime safety but also has the potential to boost tourism in New Mexico’s dark sky parks. DarkSky International is actively seeking volunteers to support the bill’s passage, urging citizens to advocate for the protection of our night skies for the well-being of wildlife and the enjoyment of all.
