Waterford City and County Council is participating in the National Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Project (PLEEP), which aims to retrofit 77,000 public lights to LED in the Southern region, alongside other local authorities like Cork, Clare, Kerry, and Limerick. The project focuses on maximizing energy savings, targeting a 50% reduction, and cutting down CO2 emissions by 786 tonnes annually, contributing to local climate action goals of a 51% reduction by 2030. The retrofitting of 10,000 public lights in Waterford began last August and is expected to be completed by this August, funded by the Department of Environment’s Climate Action Fund. While the improvements are anticipated to enhance public safety and efficiency, ongoing assessment has revealed infrastructural issues requiring attention before full retrofitting can occur. Waterford City and County Council plans to maintain public lighting effectively, aiming to keep non-functional lights below 2% at any given time.
