The District of Sechelt is poised to become Canada’s second official dark-sky community, with plans for an annual dark sky festival that aims to boost tourism on the Sunshine Coast. Charles Ennis, president of the Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club, advocates for this initiative, inspired by successful models like the Jasper Dark Sky Festival. The region has already hosted a successful Sunshine Coast Star Party and is planning future events as local officials express enthusiasm for promoting dark skies to attract visitors during the shoulder season. Ennis noted that Sechelt’s lighting practices have allowed it to meet the requirements for dark sky designation without the immediate need for new bylaws. A recent council meeting concluded with a unanimous decision to apply for dark sky community status, further supporting the initiative to preserve the night sky and enhance community collaboration.
