12 Colorado State Parks Seek International Dark-Sky Recognition

Colorado is taking steps to certify a dozen state parks as official dark-sky locations through DarkSky International, aiming to mitigate light pollution and enhance stargazing experiences. Currently, only Jackson Lake State Park holds this designation among the state’s 42 state parks. Key parks under consideration include Golden Gate Canyon and Staunton, with officials collaborating with DarkSky Colorado to implement compliance measures such as community outreach events, artificial lighting assessments, and developing regulations for night lighting. The certification process, which can take one to three years, is expected to promote responsible lighting practices and protect Colorado’s night skies for both residents and visitors, as highlighted by Governor Jared Polis’s commitment to preserving the state’s natural beauty.
