LED Headlights May Impair Drivers’ Vision: Strategies for Managing Glare

Recent complaints from Michiganders highlight a significant issue: the increasing brightness of vehicle headlights, particularly since the switch back to standard time. While traditional halogen bulbs emitted around 900 to 1,000 lumens, newer LED headlights produce a striking 3,600 to 4,500 lumens, enhancing visibility but also creating glare that can impair the vision of drivers in other vehicles. Since 2004, research has indicated that a large percentage of drivers find nighttime glare disturbing, and this has become more pronounced with the growing popularity of LED technology. Although the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) allowed for the installation of adaptive driving beam headlights on new vehicles to mitigate glare, no regulations currently limit headlight brightness. The Soft Lights Foundation has petitioned for regulatory action to address this concern. In the meantime, drivers can employ several strategies to reduce glare, such as adjusting mirrors and maintaining clean windshields.
