Leicester City Council has approved a £2.02 million initiative to install solar panels and LED lighting across various council-owned buildings, projected to save taxpayers £392,000 annually. The scheme, part of the council’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint since declaring a climate emergency in 2019, will include 19 installations of solar panels and the replacement of 25 lighting systems with energy-efficient LEDs equipped with motion sensors. These upgrades are expected to significantly decrease energy consumption and contribute to the council’s Clean and Green Scheme, emphasizing sustainability and cost-effectiveness in public infrastructure. The project targets various community centers, leisure facilities, and libraries throughout Leicester, aligning with broader environmental goals.
