At a public hearing on February 3, Melanie Moser, chair of the Lewes Planning Commission, presented a proposed lighting ordinance aimed at reducing light pollution in Lewes to enhance visibility of the night sky, including the Milky Way. The ordinance advocates for dark sky lighting standards that direct light downward, minimizing glare and light trespass to support wildlife, human health, and energy conservation. It will apply to streetlights and commercial properties, giving businesses five years to comply, while residential areas remain unaffected. The planning commission is also exploring a pilot program to demonstrate dark sky practices in public areas. Concerns from Lewes police regarding safety and lighting levels have been addressed in the ordinance’s draft. The city council is set to review the proposal in an upcoming meeting.
