Chefchaouen has become the first city in Morocco and Africa to implement a fully LED-equipped street lighting network, marking a significant advancement in environmental sustainability. Mayor Mohamed Sefiani announced this initiative during the Nexus Forum on Energy, Water, and Food Security, emphasizing its role in promoting sustainable development and combating climate change. The project aims to replace traditional sodium lamps with energy-efficient LED lights, which not only reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions but also improve air quality. Economically, it is projected to cut the municipality’s electricity costs by over 50%, allowing for reallocation of savings toward other development initiatives. The successful implementation of this project is the result of collaboration among local government, provincial authorities, and international organizations, underscoring the importance of partnership in achieving sustainable development goals.
