The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) is nearing completion of a significant LED street lighting upgrade project, aimed at enhancing safety and energy efficiency for thousands of commuters. The initiative replaces 404 High-Pressure Sodium lights with energy-efficient LED bulbs along a route stretching from the Lighthouse on South Quay to Grand Bazaar, with over half of the installations already completed as of February 7. Slated for completion by February 21, this $1.8 million project is part of T&TEC’s broader transition to LED technology, which began in 2016 and has been implemented across various regions. The shift to LED lighting not only reduces energy consumption by up to 75% in residential settings but also lowers maintenance costs and aligns with global sustainability standards, ultimately promising safer and more reliable roadways for the public.
