A recent study led by Dori Blakely, a doctoral candidate from the University of Victoria, sheds new light on the formation of planets alongside young stars, specifically focusing on two planets around the star PDS 70. Utilizing a specialized instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers observed the late-stage formation of these planets within the protoplanetary disk, identifying the presence of warm dust that suggests the formation of circumplanetary disks. This research not only enhances our understanding of how gas giant-like planets and their atmospheres develop but also hints at the potential formation of exomoons. The findings, published in the Astronomical Journal, represent a significant advance in astrophysics, offering a glimpse into the cosmic nursery of planet formation, although much work remains to fully comprehend the process.
