Boulder City, located just southeast of Las Vegas, has begun an ambitious project to retrofit its streetlights with energy-efficient fixtures designed to reduce light pollution and enhance stargazing opportunities. In 2023, the city secured a $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Authority to replace nearly all of its 2,150 streetlights with dimmable, eco-friendly alternatives. This initiative aims to curb greenhouse gas emissions, protect local ecosystems, and support sustainable tourism aligned with the city’s goal of achieving dark-sky certification. As of January, approximately 63% of the streetlight fixtures have been replaced, with all installations expected to be completed by 2028. City officials are exploring additional steps toward obtaining dark-sky designations and are working on developing a comprehensive lighting management plan.
