Opinion: Steps to Mitigate Light Pollution in SK

In an increasingly urbanized world, light pollution is emerging as a significant environmental issue, impacting our ability to enjoy natural night skies and disrupting local ecosystems. Professor Penhallow, a renowned figure at the University of Rhode Island, highlighted this concern during a memorable observatory visit decades ago. Recently, the director of the Vatican Observatory has shed light on the different sources of light pollution, including the problematic “sky glow” and “glare” caused by improperly shielded outdoor lighting. Research from Dark Sky International estimates that light pollution wastes about $3 billion annually in electricity and calls for increased awareness and regulation. Various regions, including Paris and New Hampshire, are taking action to mitigate this issue, while Rhode Island has recognized the benefits of fully shielded lighting. However, South Kingstown has yet to adopt stringent measures against excessive glare, which detracts from the beauty of its natural surroundings and affects community comfort. As residents advocate for better lighting regulations, there is hope for a collective movement towards reducing light pollution and preserving the night sky.
