The Brighton and Hove City Council’s Planning Committee has unanimously approved a proposal to install new lighting at St Nicholas of Myra, one of the city’s oldest churches, which dates back to the 14th century. Located at the top of Church Street, the lighting plans include pedestrian lights, LED columns, spotlights, and replacement wall-mounted fixtures aimed at enhancing visibility and safety around the heritage site. Despite previous concerns regarding colored lighting due to potential glare and wildlife impact, the new scheme is designed to improve the church’s illumination without compromising its historical integrity. Committee members expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing the need for better lighting to enhance the church’s visibility and accessibility, particularly during evening events. St Nicholasof Myra is a grade II* listed building and holds significant cultural importance as Brighton’s original parish church.
