In a concerted effort to enhance Roan Mountain State Park, staff and volunteers have made significant improvements to the facilities and landscape, especially following damage from Hurricane Helene in late 2024. Nineteen cabins were remodeled last year, featuring updated kitchens, bathrooms, and fresh decor, with additional plans to upgrade the porches and install new lighting this year. Improvements extend beyond the cabins, including the construction of a new flume for the water wheel at the visitor center, landscaping with native plants, and the installation of various amenities such as a water bottle/bike repair station and a color-blind viewing station at the Chestnut Ridge Overlook. While the park has faced challenges with trail closures and damaged infrastructure, volunteers have logged thousands of hours helping with cleanup efforts. Park Manager Monica Johnson expressed gratitude for community support as they work towards restoring the park’s natural beauty and accessibility.
