A recent study published in Building and Environment reveals that a simple adjustment in bedroom lighting can significantly enhance morning alertness and mitigate sleep inertia, a common experience of grogginess upon waking. Researchers from Osaka Metropolitan University found that exposure to natural light for just 20 minutes before waking compared to no light or prolonged dawn light exposure improved participants’ alertness and reduced sleepiness. Conducted with nineteen university students in a controlled lab setting, the study demonstrated that the most beneficial condition involved moderate natural light just prior to waking. The findings suggest that leveraging natural light, which aligns with human biological clocks, may provide a practical and energy-efficient solution to support healthier wake-up rituals. While the results are promising, further research is necessary to explore these effects across diverse demographics and real-world sleep environments.
