Longtime Arkansas lawmaker Stephen Meeks is making a significant legislative push as he nears the end of his 15-year career, successfully garnering support for the Arkansas Nighttime Environment Protection Act. This bill, which aims to reduce light pollution, was approved by the House with 60 votes and is co-sponsored by Sen. Missy Irvin. If enacted, it would limit the strength of lighting fixtures installed by public entities, while allowing exceptions for areas like prisons and sports fields. Meeks, who has faced challenges from various stakeholders in previous attempts to pass similar legislation, believes reducing artificial light can lead to health benefits, cost savings, and boost rural tourism by enhancing stargazing opportunities. The bill now awaits consideration in the Senate before the legislative session adjourns on Wednesday.
