Newport City Council has announced plans to restore half of its street lights, following concerns from shift workers about safety at night. The lights had previously been switched off to save costs, with the council turning off 19,000 LED lights from midnight to 6:00 AM as part of budget measures implemented earlier this year. The council will now install light-sensitive cells on thousands of lampposts, with an initial investment of £320,000 and projected annual energy costs of £139,000. While council leaders emphasize the importance of safety for residents, some members express worries about the financial and environmental implications of this decision. The implementation of smart lighting technology is being considered to address these concerns in the future.
