Thailand’s Energy Ministry Advocates for LED Lighting to Enhance Economic Power Efficiency

As electricity consumption in Thailand continues to rise at an alarming rate—growing 3 percent annually and 4.3 percent in residential areas—government bodies are urging reductions to ensure a stable supply. The Ministry of Energy is promoting the use of energy-efficient appliances, particularly those labeled with the energy efficiency label No.5, and advocating for a switch to LED lighting, which uses 50 percent less energy than traditional bulbs. The Energy Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has initiated projects to convert street lights to LED, yielding significant savings in power usage and public costs, while drastically reducing carbon emissions. If the public widely adopts LED technology, it is estimated that Thailand could conserve an additional 300 million units of energy each year.
