The Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth has recently achieved certification as a Dark Sky business, a recognition awarded by Minnesota’s chapter of Dark Sky International. This certification aligns with the zoo’s mission as a conservation organization, as it already caters to nocturnal and crepuscular animals. To qualify, the zoo implemented outdoor lighting practices that prevent upward light pollution and adhere to specific warmth in color temperature (2700 Kelvins or lower). Caroline Routley, the zoo’s marketing manager, noted that the zoo typically does not operate lights at night. The certification ceremony also recognized several local businesses, including Fitger’s and the Village at Matterhorn, spearheaded by light pollution advocate Scott Vesterstein and others committed to wildlife-friendly lighting solutions.
