A research team led by Rumi Chunara, an associate professor at NYU, has developed an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) system that utilizes satellite imagery to more accurately track urban green spaces, a critical component for promoting healthy cities. Tested in Karachi, Pakistan, where environmental disparities are evident, the system boasts a significant improvement in accuracy—89.4% compared to traditional methods which only achieved 63.3%. The team’s findings highlight a stark divide in green space distribution, with some neighborhoods lacking adequate vegetation while others thrive with tree-lined streets. The study indicates that urban areas with more paved roads typically enjoy greater greenery. Enhanced by a technique called ‘green augmentation,’ which incorporates varying vegetation data across conditions, this research provides valuable insights for urban planners aiming to address inequalities and promote climate resilience.
