Hawke’s Bay Airport is nearing completion of a $3 million upgrade to its runway lighting system, implementing advanced LED technology designed to enhance visibility and safety. The project, which began nine months ago, involves the installation of 169 new LED lights and a state-of-the-art control and power system, ensuring compliance with both local and international aviation standards. According to CEO Nick Flack, the new system offers significant improvements over the outdated lighting, including features like pilot-activated lighting and variable intensity to adapt to weather conditions. The local Air Ambulance Service has praised the airport’s effective planning during the upgrade, noting that no delays to emergency flights occurred, which are crucial for the Hawke’s Bay community.
