PPL Electric Utilities, in partnership with the city of Allentown, Pennsylvania, has launched a trial project to install LED street lights along a seven-block section of Hamilton Street. The initiative involves retrofitting 53 fixtures, replacing outdated high-pressure sodium lights with energy-efficient LED alternatives from General Electric and Cooper Lighting. This upgrade is projected to cut energy consumption by up to 50%, enough to power 1.5 to 2.5 homes, while significantly reducing annual operational costs—from $54 for a 150W HPS light to just $29 for the LED solution. The LEDs are expected to have a lifespan of 12 years or longer. The successful completion of this pilot is seen as a key step in evaluating the effectiveness of solid-state lighting and will help inform future decisions regarding energy-efficient street lighting in the city. The first LED fixture was ceremoniously installed by the Allentown Traffic Planning and Control Bureau last Friday.
