Amsterdam city officials reported a remarkable reduction of $20,000 per month in lighting bills due to an ongoing project converting over 1,900 street lights to energy-efficient LED fixtures. Launched last fall and managed by the New York State Power Authority, the $2.2 million initiative has already transitioned over 800 light fixtures, funded partially by a $1.1 million state grant. Ownership of existing utility poles was secured last summer, allowing the project to proceed without ongoing rental fees. Though initial expectations aimed for completion by the end of 2024, progress may be affected by winter weather conditions. The new LED lights promise improved visibility and reduced light pollution, with advancements like smart technology set to allow for dynamic adjustments based on community needs. So far, only a small percentage of the newly installed lights have experienced operational issues, which will be addressed promptly by contractors.
