Researchers at IIT Kharagpur are pioneering a novel method for generating electricity from the Subarnarekha River by utilizing the water’s flow without traditional turbines. This innovative energy harvesting technique has shown promising results, successfully powering LED lights in the Keshiari block of Paschim Medinipur district. Led by Onkar Venkatyalla and Saikat Nandi, the project not only aims to provide clean energy but also focuses on boosting local economies and enhancing tourism in the region. The team has developed a portable “energy harvesting machine” that operates efficiently in smaller water bodies with minimal infrastructure, thereby addressing traditional hydroelectricity’s limitations. Plans are underway to expand the technology’s applications, including powering speedboats and local infrastructure like the ‘Jungalkanya Setu’ bridge, with expectations for completion in the next six months. This initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions and rural economic development in India.
