Hereford’s historic Shirehall, a grade II* listed building in St Peter’s Square that has remained largely unused since 2020, is set for a transformative renovation with an additional £1 million in funding approved. The project, part of the Stronger Hereford initiative, aims to convert the former courtrooms and custody suite into a new library and learning center, expected to reopen to the public by late next year. Current renovations are already underway, with the new funding allowing for the swift initiation of a second phase that includes window refurbishments, LED lighting installation, and the removal of an outdated CCTV control room. Additional enhancements will feature solar panel installation and a revamped kitchen, with budgetary provisions for unforeseen challenges, reflecting the building’s age and condition. The total funding for the Shirehall project amounts to £2.9 million for this financial year.
