Becket Residents Advocate for Dark Sky Bylaw While Town Commemorates its Nighttime Views

Residents of Becket, Massachusetts, are rallying to preserve the area’s dark night sky in light of a proposed marijuana farm that could introduce constant artificial lighting nearby. Lei-Anne Ellis, a local resident and advocate for dark skies, fears that the cultivation facility set to span 100,000 square feet may disrupt the stargazing environment she cherishes. Following a lawsuit against the town after the farm’s special permit was granted, residents are now pushing for a dark sky bylaw to be voted on in May, which would align Becket with about 60 other Massachusetts towns that regulate light pollution. In support of this initiative, community events include “Navigating by the Night Sky,” led by amateur astronomer Destin Heilman, and the annual meeting of DarkSky Massachusetts, both aimed at raising awareness about light pollution and its ecological impacts.
