The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in Berkshire is launching an independent investigation into the impact of bright headlights on road users, addressing growing concerns from drivers reporting glare and discomfort. Equipped with specialized instruments, a modified vehicle will measure light levels, weather conditions, and ambient light to identify circumstances leading to headlight glare. The findings, expected to be submitted to the Department of Transport in spring 2024, come in response to complaints from diverse age groups, as reported by optometrists and the RAC. Experts highlight the risks associated with intense car lights, particularly high-intensity discharge beams, which can lead to temporary vision impairment, affecting not only drivers but pedestrians and cyclists as well. As bright lights become more prevalent in modern vehicles, the potential for serious accidents attributed to glare remains a pressing concern for road safety.
